Welcome to the Armies of Exigo WikiEdit

Armies of Exigo is a real-time strategy video game for Microsoft Windows. The game was created by Black Hole Entertainment released in 2004 and distributed by Electronic Arts. One unique aspect of the game is that it has an underground mode. This makes the game more challenging as the player has to work on two fronts and might have an army come from an unexpected area.

In October 2006, EA shut down the online game servers, but there is still the possibility to play online via Gameranger.

Gameplay and Features Edit

Factions Campaigns
Empire Empire Campaign
Fallen Fallen Campaign
Beast Beast Campaign

The game contains a single-player campaign with 36 missions with three very distinct factions, a skirmish mod against the AI on a plethora of different maps to choose from, a chess implementation, a multiplayer mode via internet (no more, see above) or via LAN and a powerful map editor with trigger support.

The gameplay appears to be very similar to Warcraft III, especially considering the factions involved: The Empire (Humans, Elves, Dwarves, etc.), the Beasts (Lizardmen and other barbaric humanoid creatures), and the Fallen (Undead and eldritch monsters). The player has to gather resources (gold, wood, and gems) to produce units and buildings, as well as to research spells and upgrades. The player can also select units and give them orders to attack, move or build. Different unit types are built at different structures. It follows the "old-school" style of RTS gameplay that was commonplace in the 1990s in titles such as Warcraft II, StarCraft and the Age of Empires series.

A unit can gain levels in the game through killing enemy units and so gather experience points. By gaining a level a unit becomes stronger. Almost all units in the game can level up to level 5 except for mechanical units, phoenixes and most of the spell-caster units. The Empire and The Beast units level individually and The Fallen as collective by gathering experience points in their Soul Trap.

Troubleshooting Edit

  • Windows 10 has known problems with the game, due to copy protection.
  • If the game keeps crashing after skipping the intro video, don't skip too quickly.
  • A dedicated graphics card is needed, otherwise, the game won't start with an error saying "The graphics card doesn't meet the system requirements" or the like. This is especially the case with many more recent computers and laptops with a dedicated graphics card and an integrated graphics processor in the processor. When owning such a device, the game must be started actively with the dedicated graphics card or there will be an error as above.
  • If the computer has no dedicated graphics card, Swiftshader is an option. It is a DLL that forces the CPU to render the game. In order to do that, the correct DLL must be downloaded and put into the installation directory, then the game should start without any more errors. Software Rendering is somewhat slow, so it is recommended to lower the graphics settings a bit for smooth gameplay.
  • The game runs with Wine on Linux and MacOS.
  • Patch 1.4 is strongly recommended
